Have you heard that story about two men running from a bear? In desperation, they climb a tree, taking their shoes off to do so. When they get halfway to the top, one man stops climbing to put on his shoes. The other man is shocked that his companion is wasting time instead of climbing higher up the tree. The man who now has his shoes all laced up says the bear will eventually get to them and he must jump off and run as fast as possible again. “So you think you can outrun a bear?” asks Mr. Barefoot. And wise Mr. Ready-With-My-Shoes-On replies, “I don’t need to outrun the bear, I only need to outrun you!”
The smart guy who took the time to stop and wear his shoes was prepared to run when he needed to and escape the bear. His poor accomplice who raced to the top of the tree would likely end up as the bear’s meal. This story is an example of being able to think beyond the obvious and make smart decisions that require a little more time to do, but pay off in the long run.
