- What is my personal learning style?
Knowing this can help you retain information the first time you learn it, instead of learning it over and over again. The first two types, visual and auditory, are common but in today’s busy world there are so many distractions that it can be hard to retain information from just seeing and hearing it.
- Visual – seeing something and being able to remember it from site
- Auditory – hearing the subject is the best way for you to retain the information
- Tactile (Touch) – you have to actually do something in order to learn it (much like our hands-on training)
- How can I organize all the information (both current and new)?
- How can I turn this information into a system to help my website/my clients’ websites?
- After I learn the information – do I have a resource for asking more questions, or do I have to research from scratch every time?
- Do I communicate well with the instructor, or am I just being talked to without the chance to ask questions (or feeling comfortable with asking questions)?
Here’s a list of many of the ways to learn – so you can compare SEO training options for yourself:
Read a book about SEO
Search Engine Optimization for Dummies is a popular book for this topic – it covers all the important basic information and takes a deep dive into some more detailed topics. The challenge is that you are learning alone and for the most part you are simply reading the information – not hearing it explained or taught and you certainly can’t ask questions along the way.
Watch SEO videos online
Lynda.com has a whole series of video classes for SEO. I know several people who have learned a lot about SEO by watching them and come away with some good understanding of what SEO includes. One challenge however is that SEO is constantly changing. And again you are watching a pre-recorded video and not able to ask questions interactively as you go along.
Attend a SEO webinar
With SEO webinars, you definitely get fresher information as well as more interactivity with the presenter. Platforms like Go To Webinar allow attendees to “raise their hand” and ask questions about the topics being discussed. That’s a huge improvement over using videos for your primary source of SEO training. There are a couple of drawbacks – first, most webinars have a time limitation, so the number of questions are limited by how many are attending and how many questions people might have. Secondly, there could be some resistance to asking questions during webinars. Attendees may have questions, but they are not thinking about them right at that moment because they are still processing the new information.
Go to a local SEO seminar
Many SEO firms create presentations for various conferences and organizations, or publicize their own SEO/Social Media/Online Marketing seminar. These one hour presentations usually provide a taste of the information and don’t take a very deep dive. The goal is to help attendees realize the importance of SEO and why it is a key part of any business marketing plan. While sometimes you will see seminars that will last several hours – typically they are shorter in length. This is a great way to get the boss and key decision makers to “buy in” on a Search Engine Optimization program for your organization.
However – if you are looking for a system to manage your SEO efforts – these seminars typically do not provide enough information. Their real goal is to get you as a client for their own SEO services.
Attend a Hands On SEO Training Certification Class
Classes like those offered by the Search Engine Academy have many benefits over the learning methods discussed above. We take five days to talk about a system for doing SEO and we talk in detail about the various aspects of implementing that system. Additionally, since it is a multi-day class (even for our two-day SEO Essentials class) there is plenty of time to look at your individual websites and ask lots of questions. We also offer six months of SEO mentoring for all of our five day Master SEO attendees. That way, after you return to your office and start working on your online presence you can come up with even more questions to ask.
Of course taking five days off from work and investing your time and money can be an issue. However, after you learn our SEO methods – you can definitely start implementing these immediately on your site. Our goal is to be completely transparent with all the information we provide you and not keep anything back. We are not there to try to get you to hire us for additional work. We’re there to help you learn!
