Here’s the latest Google search update in a video from Matt Cutts. It’s an interesting watch, but if you are a busy person like me, you may want a quick breakdown of the most important parts so you can put it to work for your business (or your clients) right now.
- Keep working on good content – Matt says “We’re working hard to show users your high quality content.” So regardless of anything else – quit trying to chase the Google algorithm. Concentrate on making unique articles, graphics, pictures – anything that people want to share with their friends and colleagues online.
- Google is very close to deploying “Penguin 2.0”. If you don’t know what Penguin is – take a look at this fun video where I explain Google Penguin (that is if you can not be distracted by the cute penguins in the video). In a nutshell – don’t buy links, don’t buy into linking schemes. There is always some loophole in Google that can help your site rank high in the short term. But Google will close the loophole and your site and you business could be permanently damaged.
- On the topic of linking schemes – Google is also “going upstream” and targeting what’s called link networks. So again websites that promise lots of “high Page Rank links to your site” should be avoided. More details in this Search Engine Land article.
There are some other really interesting, more advanced topics in the video – but now you have the info you need to make a difference today. Pay attention to what Google puts out – it can save you lots of headaches in the future.
