I had an email today, one that I get fairly often, which is a person looking for an SEO agency who can “do SEO” for their new startup ecommerce company. I tend to shy away from those type of people – which may sound a little crazy.
However, I don’t want to be the person who’s going to spread my magic SEO dust on someone’s website and suddenly make them rank higher in Google. It doesn’t work that way in the digital marketing world of 2016.
My best clients are businesses who are already pretty awesome at what they do. That’s because when you’re good at providing your product or service, then you need a boost to be successful online.
But I’m a startup business – what should I do?
Part of your marketing strategy may involve buying paid search ads through Google AdWords – but that’s a totally different strategy than SEO. Google is happy to rank you high if you’re willing to pay for it.
Additionally, you should start these programs now*:
- Make sure all your online listings are consistent with your company information.
- Have a way to collect email addresses from new and prospective clients, and have a plan for communicating with them on a regular basis to stay top of mind.
- Put a program together to collect online reviews from your clients.
- Start posting to the most common social media channels for your target client – just start posting, you don’t have to be a social media expert yet.
*By the way, we offer these digital marketing services.
Long term, you want to decrease the money invested in Google AdWords.
Instead show Google how you are the most relevant brand (being awesome) for whatever the consumer is searching for – that’s SEO.
How do I start the process of being awesome?
If you’re starting a new business where you’re selling a common item (women’s clothing, for example) you have an enormous amount of competition out there. What’s going to make you stand out from the competition? Your overall product delivery, customer service, how unique and different your offering is, and much more. Those are all about doing traditional sales and marketing the right way.
There are agencies that you can work with, and a lot of them are more like traditional marketing agencies, that can help you be more awesome. One strategy is to get more relevant links to your website, but this is accomplished more like the function of a PR company – producing lots of content on your site and making sure the right influencers know about your product or service.
So how does SEO consulting fit into all of this?
We come in as the experts that help you take it to the next level online. It isn’t your job to understand how Google and the other search engines work (and you shouldn’t because you’re busy taking care of their own business).
Just keep that in mind. If you are starting a new business and looking for somebody to work with, you might want to go the traditional marketing route first.
If you’re already doing awesome, doing a great job with your business, but you know you want to take it to the next level, then that’s when an SEO and digital marketing consultant can really make a difference for you.
