Digital marketing agencies may try to persuade you that only the experienced and qualified can carry out successful SEO, but this is simply not true. Search Engine Optimization is not rocket science, and it’s in your interest to know how to carry out at least the basics of SEO for your business.
On-page and Off-page Optimization—What Has Changed
SEO is divided into two main categories – on-page optimization and off-page optimization. On-page optimization used to mean ensuring that your website delivers what the search engines are looking for within your site – meta tags, keyword-rich page titles and content, alt/image tags etc.
However, times have changed, and now it just as much about ensuring your pages have high quality, unique, readable, interesting content designed to satisfy your target audience. Google goes into a lot of detail about this in their guidelines for webmasters.
Off-page optimization is an ever-growing area and should you could definitely argue that it does not even fall under the term “SEO” any longer – it has little to do with the search engines directly. Yes, your actions establishing links, driving traffic through your social media profiles, email marketing, and content marketing will inevitably affect your ranking on the search engines, but that should not be the sole purpose for developing these strategies.
The basics of on-page optimization can be carried out by you. After all, who knows your company, products and audience better – you or an SEO agency? There are more complicated procedures, such as running effective PPC (Pay Per Click) campaigns that you could farm out to an agency. Ask yourself first though, whether off-page optimization might not bring better rewards…for less money?
