Every month after my SEO training classes, I’m going to tell a story from a lesson learned in the classroom. And this week it’s about using images instead of words on your website.
One of my most recent students had a site full of information – promoting some specific industry training. However, they saved those flyers as images and put their flyers on the website. Seems pretty innocent, doesn’t it?
However, Google does not read the text in an image very well. It can, but it has to work really hard. All that information about their upcoming classes, the location, what it included and the other details of the class were hidden from Google. And as a result also hidden from their target audience.
It’s a shortcut many business owners make – all the way from large B2B organizations to small businesses. The thought process goes something like this: “We have all the information in an image (or even a PDF) – all we have to do is put that image on our website for people. Then they can read it and learn about our business. They’re sure to call us after they read that great information.” This is an assumption that is completely wrong. Businesses think that “if you build it, they will come” – and don’t understand that no-one will come! Why? Because Google has very little idea about what is contained in that image – and if it is relevant to searchers.
See below for the difference between readable text and text as an image.
This text is easy for
Google to read.
One of our clients had that same assumption. By fixing this problem they have seen an over 300% increase in business since 2007. Real numbers from a thriving small business!
So don’t shortchange your site by taking the shortcut of putting your text in images. Google can’t read them – and you’re potential customers are missing out!
