WordPress continues to take the web development industry by storm – but the question remains, “How does WordPress SEO actually work?”.
You’ve got an idea for a website, or you’ve already created a website in WordPress – pretty straighforward to start with, which is why WordPress is so popular. Now it seems like it should be super easy to “rank on page one” for Google and the other search engines – but you may find that is not happening for you.
Here at the Dallas Search Engine Academy we hear that scenario all the time – so here are our Top 3 Tips to get the most from your WordPress SEO.
WordPress SEO Tip #1 – Don’t Host Your Blog/Website at “MySite.wordpress.com”
It’s convenient – but don’t fall into the trap of hosting your site as a subdomain of wordpress.com. Even if you choose to host your site using the WordPress.com website, you can still choose your own URL. From an SEO standpoint – this is very important. Otherwise you are improving the SEO of WordPress.com and not your own company.
Another alternative that I prefer, but does take a bit more technical know-how is to purchase your hosting on a service such as GoDaddy and install the WordPress platform on that hosting. GoDaddy and many other hosting firms make that extremely easy to do. The only drawback is that you do have to remember to login the admin section of your website from time to time and update your version of WordPress.
The important part here is control – you want to be able to have as much control over your website as possible so you can make all the changes necessary to keep your site in tip-top SEO shape.
WordPress SEO Tip #2 – Take Control With Permalinks
When you first set up your WordPress site – the blog section by default names your blog pages with a number – however you can get much better SEO results if you take the time to change your settings and make the URL more closely match the topic of your post. Note the screen shot below and how we changed the Permalinks for SearchEngineAcademyTexas.com to be the Post Name instead of the Default. Do this today to start seeing great results!
WordPress SEO Tip #3 – Set Your Title and Description Tags
This is very easy to do in WordPress and there are many great plugins to make it even easier. Just do a search for the term “WordPress SEO Plugin” and you’ll find lots of choices. I really like All In One SEO, but there are many more to choose from.
These Plugins allow you full control over the VERY important Title Tags and Meta Description Tags. Why are they important?
Title Tags tell Google and the other search engines exactly what your page is about – and that’s also what shows up in the search results for your pages.
Meta Description Tags are like a mini sales pitch for your website. When someone sees your listing in Google, the Meta Description is the text that appears below the link to your site – so YOU can control what people see about your site, even before they visit.
When you are using WordPress SEO techniques – you can make a real difference. Follow these three simple tips for WordPress Search Engine Optimization – and watch the difference in your rankings.
